In the foxhole with golf’s most powerful anonymous man

The tank looms low on the horizon over the cliffs of Monterey, lurking in the high grass with a distinct sense of foreboding.

It takes only a few moments in its presence to realize why.

Inside, the tank is ablaze with energy. The ceilings are low and the light is lower. The space is at once cramped and constantly churning with new people. The atmosphere raises the hair on your forearms, and it’s not immediately clear if the culprit is the icy air-conditioning or the claustrophobia.

Wearing a headset and seated in a desk chair at the center of the chaos is the general. Everything that happens inside the tank — from the constant stream of information to the unusual vernacular practiced by its soldiers in machine-gun-like bursts (“Atlas … one … GO!”; “Where are you Dragon?”; “Diamond! Diamond! Diamond!”) — is his design.

Control inside the tank is like oxygen, and it’s what leads many people in the general’s job to lead like autocrats. But this general isn’t like that. He’s learned that fear, while a powerful motivator, can also be stifling. It can hold back innovation and progress. It can stop self-improvement.

“When that whole bunch shows up, they’re looking at you,” the general says. “They come with great ideas, but they’re looking at me. And I have to be ready, or they’re just gonna sit there, because they need their marching orders.”

The general’s name is Sellers Shy, and the truth is that he’s not a general at all. He’s never received any military training, and certainly no combat honors. In fact, the only foxhole he knows is this vehicle, which feels like a tank but is really a production trailer. The trailer carries Shy, who is CBS Golf’s lead producer, from dreamy location to dreamy location for the six months a year that his employer specializes in the chaotic art of golf TV coverage … or, as you might know it, your weekend afternoon naps.

On a chilly Valentine’s Day in Northern California, the trailer is where we find Shy. It is also where we learn that “lead golf producer” is an enormously unbecoming job title for the real labor of his day-to-day job. His work, effort, preparation, leadership, his cool under pressure — hell, even his political savvy? All of it would be equally useful in the battlefield as it is on the fairways of Monterey Peninsula.

On a good day, Shy’s work asks that he bring 18 different golf holes to life in one coherent story complete with satisfying graphics and thoughtful visuals and plenty of commercials and irreverent commentary and — if he’s lucky — not a single missed shot anywhere.

To do all that well once in a lifetime is a feat. To do it well enough to cover four straight days at a golf tournament is a divine act. And to do it over six months of the PGA Tour season, slowly pulling together a group of disparate personalities despite their exhaustion and their missing families and their too few days off, well, that’s nothing short of a miracle.

Men used to go to war. Now, it seems, they go to Pebble Beach.

“JOHNSONNNNN,” Sellers Shy says, a grin creeping across his face.

“Where are youuuu, Johnson?” He says again, his voice in a sing-song.

It’s late on Saturday afternoon inside the tank at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am — Valentine’s Day Saturday — and Sellers Shy is standing at attention.

On the screen in front of Shy, one of golf’s most beloved fate-tempters, Jordan Spieth, has just done something particularly reckless. On the famed par-5 18th, a hole with lots of fairway to the right and the entire Pacific Ocean to the left, Spieth has missed … left. Now one of Shy’s deputies in the field is reporting that Spieth is planning to play his second shot from the rocks next to the ocean.

These are the moments when Shy earns his paycheck. Principally, Shy’s job is to tell the story of the golf tournament to the millions of fans watching at home, factoring for all the commercials and logistical hurdles. Most of that job is clerical — organization, reinforcement, morale, systems, processes — but the important parts come in seconds like this one, when the opportunity arises to do something special.

Nobody in the truck needs to explain that Spieth has a famed history of debauchery on the cliffs of Pebble Beach. In 2022, Shy’s second season as lead producer, Spieth risked death to take a mighty lash at a ball sitting on the very edge of a cliffside — a moment so daring it immediately became one of the most viral moments of his career.

Viral moments make Shy’s spine tingle. The best days in the job are the ones in which the natural work of TV storytelling — cameras and commentators and drama and stakes — comes together to create a great crescendo of disbelief within the viewer. In the truck, Shy orchestrates these moments with impressive verve, leaning principally on imagery and silence to tell the story, the opposite of what one might expect from a producer with a multi-million-dollar broadcast arsenal at his disposal. The result is his signature — moments that feel distinct and ethereal, almost as if the viewer has been transported directly into the emotion of the moment.

“Sellers is just such a genius at throwing out a shot and making sure we get the moment that matters,” Steve Milton, his director, says. “That’s his job, that’s his role, and everything else emanates from that point.”

Shy has not been a lead golf producer for very long — he started in the job in 2021 — but he has displayed an unusual collection of gifts for life as a TV general. Under his leadership, CBS’s broadcast has transformed into a poster child for modern golf TV, pulling levers few knew existed to deliver moments few knew the sport was still capable of producing. Moments like Rory McIlroy’s tear-filled walk at the 2025 Masters, a Shy-produced moment that instantly became an international sensation — and perhaps the biggest golf event of the decade.

“The truth is that I didn’t have to say a word to anyone. Everyone knew exactly what to do in that moment,” Shy says. “The truth is that there’s nothing we could have said that would have matched the tears rolling down his face.”

Restraint was easy to find then. It’s harder now as Spieth descends onto the beach in Monterey. Part of the reason for that is Shy’s shiniest new toy, Johnson Wagner, is practically begging for the chance to be used.

Wagner, a former pro, earned near-mythical levels of golf internet fame for his role on Golf Channel as a re-enactor of the greatest televised moments in the sport — a schtick that evolved into a fascinating reference point for the ordinary brilliance of star pros.

When Shy brought Wagner aboard the CBS team at the start of 2026, many in the golf world figured the mustachioed man would slide into some version of his old Golf Channel role. But Shy keeps throwing curveballs, keeping Wagner away from his clubs — and focused on the action happening on the course — for most of his first few weeks in the gig.

“If you do something every single week, it’s not special anymore. It feels forced,” Shy says. “Save it for the big primetime game, for the SEC Championship, for Army-Navy. It’s the same with Johnson. You just don’t want to do it and do it, because then it kind of waters it down.”

Now Shy’s trigger finger is really itching. Here’s the game’s most famous daredevil, threatening disaster on one of the sport’s most iconic holes, and Shy just so happens to have the TV personality best equipped to risk death recreating it. Finally, after a few long seconds, he gives in.

“I’m sensing it might be time for a little Johnson Wagner down on the rocks,” Shy says into his headset, his smile wide enough to count his teeth. “Johnson, do you think you could get down there for us and show us what’s going on with Jordan Spieth?”

Wagner vaults into motion, but Shy hardly notices. His attention is already on the next thing: a check-in with what his colleagues call “the chessboard.” Every producer has a version of Shy’s “chessboard” — a four-dimensional mental checklist that weighs the things that need to happen (commercials, promos, etc.) against the things they want to happen (cool graphics packages, featurettes, on-course interviews, Johnson Wagner scaling the cliffside, etc.) against the things that are happening (shots, birdies, bogeys, big moments, risers and fallers). The best producers can manage it all without losing sight of the story.

“If you see me in that truck, you catch me in a moment where I’m probably thinking four shots ahead,” he says. “I know I have this, and that will take me to there, and then that will take me to a replay — and what I’m thinking about isn’t the first thing. It’s that I’ve got to find out what’s going on four and five ahead.”

Interestingly, Shy’s most important moments in the truck arrive when the chessboard gets thrown out the window. And unbeknownst to anyone on Saturday evening at Pebble Beach, that’s precisely what’s happening to Johnson Wagner.

As Wagner shuffles out to the rocks, a prolonged ruling in one of the final groups stalls out the broadcast’s momentum. (Shy, ever the storyteller, holds the whole broadcast still as the officials adjudicate the ruling. “I don’t care how long it goes, this is the whole story.”) Meanwhile, Wagner’s headset is malfunctioning, leaving him unable to communicate with Shy in the tank. The opportunity to film a recreation of Spieth’s heroic lash from the beach is dwindling, and Shy is in the truck trying to deliver that message, but Wagner can’t hear him.

Eventually, Shy has to make a decision. He calls it in from the tank: The segment is off.

These are the hard decisions that fill Shy’s days — decisions he knows will disappoint the members of his team and frustrate the people who go to great lengths to make things that nobody sees.

Shy knows his decisions have a much longer tail than it seems even in the moment. On a good day, his decisions affect the way millions of golf fans perceive the sport, meaning Shy has the power to alter the reality of golf as we know it.

It’s an enormous responsibility, and yet it seems to fall on Shy comfortably. In an entire day in the truck during one of the biggest PGA Tour events of the season, Shy never once raised his voice at a colleague, castigated a teammate for a failure, or generally seemed to lose his cool.

In fact, the most agitated anyone seemed all day inside the tank was when one of his broadcasters made the timeless golf TV faux pas of suggesting a player was “addressing his ball.” Almost immediately, the whole truck roared back in unison.

“Hello, ball!”

It was an inside joke, but for a second, it sounded like a battle cry.

ROLL CALL with the CBS Golf team lasts about 15 seconds, and covers about 70 years of sports TV history.

“Well, let’s see,” Shy says, his eyes scanning the room. “Milton’s the 80s. Rikhoff is the late ’80s. Sven is the early ’90s. I’m ’97, but I was a runner with Frank for a decade starting in ’86.”

Shy calls his teammates inside the tank “a super group of musical chairs” — and as it turns out, even that is underselling it. Inside the truck during CBS Golf productions is what might be the most decorated group of “subordinates” in sports TV history.

“We don’t have anybody in areas of real importance who hasn’t done it all,” Shy says, though it takes a few seconds to understand exactly the understatement of that sentence.

To Shy’s left sits Steve Milton, director extraordinaire for CBS Golf and college football, where among his credits is the (now immortal) shot of Chris Davis’ “Kick Six” to win the Iron Bowl for Auburn. To his right, running replays, is Jim Rikhoff, CBS’s lead NFL producer and a three-time producer of the Super Bowl. Behind them sits Chris Svendsen, a star producer/director who’s covered more major championships than any of them can count, and Tyler Jahn, the youngest member of the group, who’s covered golf with CBS for 16 years.

During a tournament broadcast, each member of this team can substitute for any other job inside the tank at a moment’s notice, an amoeba of talent and competency that keeps Shy’s worries about most doomsday scenarios at bay. In fact, some of his colleagues suggest the depth of experience actually shortens the workload, because it keeps Shy from getting too persnickety about his preparation.

“He doesn’t cover all his bases just to cover them,” Milton says. “He gives instruction and focus on what really matters, so you can give 100 percent to, say, five elements that you’re going to do that day, instead of 20 elements you’re doing so-so or average. A lot of other people in the business couldn’t fathom that.”

They couldn’t fathom it because they’re not used to working with the same caliber of talent that surrounds Shy. CBS Sports producers are like Supreme Court Justices — there might be only one minted a decade, and the vast majority of them are appointments for life.

This group includes Shy, who began with CBS Sports as a high-schooler in the mid-80s. Shy was just a “runner” then — ferrying tapes and batteries between the truck and the cameramen during the one week a year the Tour came to Memphis — but he was obsessed. In 1994, he took a month off of college to assist with CBS’s coverage of the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and in 1997, CBS hired him out of Ole Miss to work in the graphics department.

Slowly, he started up the corporate ladder, advancing from graphics into work as an associate director, and from the AD chair to pre- and postgame shows. It was a methodical climb that didn’t always feel rewarding (Shy spent more than 10 years as an AD alone). In hindsight, though, it was the only way to prepare for what was coming.

“You can’t just step in here and fool people,” he says. “If you don’t have the skills or the experience, you get exposed real quick.”

In 2021, two-and-a-half decades of persistence paid off. Shy’s boss for the vast majority of his tenure at CBS, Lance Barrow, announced his retirement, and Shy quickly threw his name in for the lead job. A few months later, a press release went out announcing Shy as only the third CBS golf producer in the network’s seventy-year golf history, following in the footsteps of Barrow and the legendary “father of golf TV,” Frank Chirkinian.

At the time of his hiring, some rolled their eyes at the network, which had hired yet another a CBS lifer to a telecast yearning for a shakeup. But Shy’s bosses were unbothered. They handed Shy license to overhaul the broadcast, and he delivered a series of adjustments that immediately became hallmarks of golf on TV: a constant live scoreboard, an on-course walk-and-talk interview, and even a new CBS Golf soundtrack. More than that, CBS’s broadcasts under Shy displayed golf TV at a new velocity — ping-ponging between players and information and ideas at speeds previously thought impossible. The same five-hour broadcast window suddenly felt like it had twice as much information jammed into it. Golf TV had changed overnight.

“When we’re talking lead golf producers at CBS Sports, it’s a big deal,” says Shy’s boss, CBS Sports CEO David Berson. “I mean, we’re talking three people in seventy years. We had a whole bunch of options, but it always came back to Sellers. He just has every single characteristic we look for.”

Shy is what Berson calls a “five-tool player” as a sports TV producer — someone who has passion for golf, expertise in production, a nose for innovation, a strong collection of relationships within the industry and a natural grasp of leadership.

“He’s just really dialed all the time,” says Berson. “He lives and breathes every part of this job.”

And he needs to. The supply line for CBS’s golf broadcasts stretches halfway around the world, to the South Island of New Zealand, where a graphics team works on packages, to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where an animation specialist named Ian brings the team’s ideas to life, to Pebble Beach, where Shy can interrupt himself in the middle of a sentence and summon the team’s work within seconds.

“His skillset is so unique because he’s held every production position on our crew,” says Milton, his director. “He’s been a broadcast associate. He’s been associate director, an associate producer. He’s even directed — so he’s sat in my chair. He knows everybody’s job, and he knows how to bring efficiency to that, and what to throw out and what to focus on.”

When it works, the shifting needs of the broadcast flow between its component parts automatically.

It all comes to life when a graphics producer appears at Shy’s desk with a stat. Akshay Bhatia, the tournament leader, holds the record for the youngest player ever to hit all 18 greens in a round at Pebble Beach.

“I love the age,” he says. “It’s experience that he didn’t have that everyone else did, but I’d like to see it listed. Who else did it?”

The producer shows Shy the list, but he pauses before committing to it. He still isn’t sold.

“How about this?” the producer says, pointing to the oldest player on the list: Jack Nicklaus.

“There it is,” Shy says, storyboarding the graphic in real time. “Put them back-to-back.”

“And then we’ll put a drop on there, about 10,000 rounds played,” the producer says.

“Done,” Shy says.

He grins.

“I love when that happens.”

ON THE ALL-TIME LIST of 17-shot losses in golf tournaments, Sellers Shy’s ranks among the most influential.

After all, it was an undressing at the hands of a future PGA Tour star that helped push Shy into golf TV.

Once upon a time, Shy was a star junior golfer in Memphis — a teenager good enough to compete in multiple state amateur championships, and maybe even dream about a playing career of his own. It wasn’t until he began to play against the very best players in his age group that he realized those dreams were less realistic.

“There’s kind of a running joke around here because Notah Begay beat me by 17 shots in junior worlds,” Shy says with a smile. “But I played in two junior worlds!”

There was plenty more to Shy’s golf career than Begay’s whipping, but if the 17-shot loss helped push him to CBS, it was worth it. Shy’s strengths as a TV producer are only bolstered by his credentials as a golf diehard. He won’t claim to know more than, say, Trevor Immelman, but he knows more than enough to grant him a real voice in any golf argument on the CBS staff. Even in the teeth of the 2026 golf season, he maintains a tidy 1.3 handicap.

“Look, I know I didn’t win a U.S. Amateur,” Shy says. “But I’d like to think I’ve gained respect from the guys in the tower that at least I know what I’m talking about.”

Shy’s lead voice in the tower, Jim Nantz, says it’s about much more than respect. As lead producer, it is not unusual to spend the better part of six straight months on the road, away from your friends and family and routines. It is not unusual to be overwhelmed by the minutiae, monotony and relentlessness of the work. It is not unusual to be the face of public scorn for a mistake that might not have even been your fault.

“To succeed in this role you have to be focused on one thing: Golf,” Nantz says. “There is no deviation from that. You have to live it around the clock — and it fits so well with Sellers, because he’s been living it around the clock his whole life.”

Nantz suggests it probably isn’t a surprise that Shy is a great producer, given how attuned he is to the chaos of golf. Live television is an exercise in control, and if you’ve played golf for long enough, you know that control is an artifice.

“He has a golfer spirit,” Nantz says. “He has golfer skills — high-level golfer skills — and it starts from a place of passion for him, because this game is a vital part of his everyday life.”

Shy’s grip of the wheel makes him different from his TV producer counterparts. He doesn’t take comfort from control, but rather seems to take control from comfort. He finds comfort, principally, through golf. The control follows.

Case in point: When I asked him how his family delegates control of the TV remote, the guy who acts as the TV remote for the entire sport laughed.

“Oh I don’t care about that,” he said. “I’ll let one of my kids take care of it.”

Steve Milton, Shy’s right-hand man, says his emotions reflect something deeper about him.

“It’s his passion and his positivity that really sets him apart,” Milton says. “We have golf tournaments 10 weeks in a row at one point during the season. It takes a lot to keep everyone’s morale up and forward marching and bringing 100 percent every day. And he’s able to do that, bring out the best in everybody, and keep moving forward.”

At the intersection of his aptitude and his passion, it seems Shy has found a sense of duty. Somehow, he’s also managed to impart it upon his teammates.

“It’s Sellers’ respect for this game that initiates no other possible outcome than success, because he loves the game so much,” Milton says. “Everybody wants to succeed in that environment. Nobody wants to let the game of golf down.”

I caught a glimpse into his methods on Saturday night in Pebble Beach, shortly after Shy turned down his team’s request for a post-broadcast meal in order to set aside time for the following day’s prep work. As his team headed out the door in the hopes of a long-shot table at Pebble Beach Tap Room on Valentine’s Day night, Shy quietly retreated to the corner of the room to call a hostess.

“R-I-K-H-O-F-F. He’s bringing people,” Shy told the hostess over the phone. “Can you give them that table against the window that I was in?”

Before long, even Shy had disappeared from the tank and back to his hotel room, where the last call of the day awaited — the one Shy had been looking forward to since the morning.

The golf season is a grueling stretch in the Shy household, and Valentine’s Day is one of its unfortunate victims. Sellers is almost always somewhere on the West Coast Swing when it falls, thousands of miles from home.

Even though it was after dark in Monterey and his day had started well before 5 a.m., Shy’s final call of the day was to his wife, Stephanie, to ensure she’d received received her Valentine’s Day gifts: flowers from himself and the kids, plus seafood gumbo and turtle soup from the legendary Commander’s Palace in New Orleans.

After a few minutes of unwinding, the call ended, and it was time again to get back to work. With room service at his feet, he fired up his computer and started typing his thoughts for the following morning. The late evening is usually a game of Whack-a-Mole.

“Formats, opens, whatever needs to be done,” he says.

When he was finished, Sellers Shy collected his materials from the printer he travels with every week. Then he brushed his teeth and readied for bed.

On Saturday evening at Pebble Beach, the general was asleep by nine.

And already dreaming about Sunday.
