What’s the best way to add swing speed over the off-season?

The off-season is always a bit depressing for golfers, but it can also be productive. So long as you know what to work on, the off-season can be a time when you improve for the season ahead.

One of the best ways to utilize your time — in my opinion — is by ramping up your swing speed. If you can gain some speed before the season ahead, you’ll come out of the winter a whole new golfer.

So, what are the best ways to add speed this off-season? We asked a panel of Top 100 Teachers, and their answers are listed below.

1. Use a training aid

The best way to build speed is by using training aids like The Stack. After your baseline test, you’ll have a customized program built for you in the app to determine how much weight to swing, how many times, and when to rest. It’s the gold standard in improving speed. —Dr. Alison Curdt

2. Train like a sprinter

The best way to add swing speed in the offseason is to train like a sprinter. Sprinters run downhill to feel what it’s like to run faster. You can do the same in golf. After you’re warmed up (but before you’re tired), set aside 10–15 balls in the middle of your session and focus on swinging as fast as possible, creating the loudest swoosh you can well past the ball. Most players already have speed in their swing, it’s just in the wrong place, either before or at the ball. Training speed after the ball ensures the club was moving fast through impact. Where the ball goes is irrelevant; the goal is to feel what it’s like to swing faster so, over time, you actually do.

3. Get in shape

Get in the gym with a fitness plan. Combine that with speed training through a system like HiiTS and you’ll be well on your way to building some speed during the winter. —Jason Carbone
