A large portion of the FedEx Cup bonus money was paid out after last week’s BMW Championship, with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler taking home $23 million by securing the top spot.
But while that chunk of the FedEx Cup bonus money had already been dolled out, there was still a large pot of money to play for at this week’s Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, along with the FedEx Cup trophy.
Viktor Hovland, who won the 2023 FedEx Cup title, entered Sunday with a one-shot lead over Ryan Gerard and a three-shot edge over Scheffler, Adam Scott and Ludvig Aberg.
But Scheffler immediately put heat on Hovland on Sunday. He opened with a par and then hit his tee shot on the par-3 second to six inches. He made another birdie at the fourth to pull even with Hovland, who opened with a bogey at the first.
Hovland and Scheffler, who dueled at the Travelers Championship, battled all Sunday afternoon. Scheffler finally nudged in front by one with a birdie at No. 13. Scheffler stretched his lead to two with a birdie at 16. When Hovland dropped a shot at 17, Scheffler’s lead was three, and he had a stress-free walk up the 18th fairway to claim the FedEx Cup and the $10 million winner’s check.
With the win, Scheffler also officially passed Tiger Woods as the all-time leading money winner on the PGA Tour. Scheffler now stands at $130,390,661, while Woods is at $120,999,166.
