Scottie Scheffler called his dad. He was somewhere in Nebraska, and he needed “Mr. Fix-It.”
The memory had come to mind ahead of this week’s BMW Championship, after Scheffler had been asked if he remembered his first pro golf paycheck. He said he didn’t. But he had a story of a moment before he rose to world No. 1.
Scheffler said he and fellow pro Doc Redman had been driving around the country playing Monday qualifiers and mini-tour events, something Scheffler did after turning pro in 2018. “Good memories and fun stuff,” Scheffler said.
Only one night, Scheffler’s car was struggling.
“I think my car was running out of oil, it was the old Yukon, and I literally had to call my dad, because my dad is Mr. Fix-it, so I never had to fix anything growing up,” Scheffler said. “We were somewhere in Nebraska, and I had to call him and say, ‘Hey, dad, this is embarrassing, but can you help me figure out how to check the oil in this car? Like, it says it’s run out of oil, but everything’s fine. Like, where is it in this car?’ It was easier than me trying to Google it in the middle of nowhere, I was like, I’ll just call my dad; he’ll help us figure it out.
“But fortunately now I know how to check the oil.”
