Ivy Shepherd’s putt fell on the 14th hole on Thursday at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and the tears fell soon after.
It’d been a long, turbulent journey for Shepherd — one that had brought her to the heights of the collegiate amateur circuit and the doldrums of competitive golf. Now, for a few fleeting moments, it was complete.
She was a U.S. Women’s Mid-Am champion, and she was headed to the U.S. Women’s Open.
“It’s awesome. It’s the longest freaking Women’s Open qualifier in the history of the world. But it’s cool,” Shepherd said. “All that is just awesome, you know, results and rewards for a long week of competitive golf for somebody who is going to end up winning it. Again, just tons of gratitude. Yeah, I feel very, very blessed.”
Shepherd is the hero at the end of a strange week for amateur golf that had little to do with the Women’s Mid-Am, where a collection of adult golf lifers battled for the chance to earn a spot in the U.S. Women’s Open.
From the several women who spoke at Montclair Country Club in the aftermath of Shepherd’s win, there was no conversation about the Mid-Am field welcoming players who were once high-level pros. There was no debate about the righteousness of a “reinstated amateur” competing on the biggest stages of the game. There were no comments from ex-pros and current USGA officials supporting the pursuits of reinstated amateurs. And there was no acrimony, no disagreement, over what actually constituted the definition of an “amateur.”
These are debates worth having, but they weren’t had on Thursday at Montclair Country Club because Shepherd was so obviously and clearly not one of them. She was not a former top-flight pro golfer. Not someone who had made a good living playing the pro game. Her own self-assessment of her collegiate career — a successful endeavor that featured an invite to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur — was “way more trials than triumphs.” And that was before a brief effort at turning pro that Shepherd termed “falling flat on her face.”
No, Shepherd was a mid-am in the purest sense of the word. Somebody who made their money elsewhere (in Shepherd’s case, as an assistant golf coach at the University of Indiana), and who played golf as a side-hustle. Somebody who thought of golf as a hobby and not as a profession.
“I think I just told myself that I’m only allowed to play again if I can actually do it the right way which is to enjoy it,” Shepherd said Thursday. “To understand it’s just a blessing to be able to get to walk this golf course or swing a golf club and not be in pain.”
This is who the USGA envisioned competing in the U.S. Mid-Am when the tournament was conceived in the mid-80s. As the story goes, the governing body became wise to the fact that much of its initial amateur championships — that is, the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur — were being filled by college-aged players who played golf full-time. So it created a second amateur championship to represent the legions of older players who weren’t playing at the same rates as high-level college golfers but still deserved a chance to compete.
Under those auspices and a 25-year-old age minimum, the Mid-Am was formed — and it wasn’t until recently that some former pros began to populate the qualifiers and fields for those events. It wasn’t until more recently still that some began to speak out against those same ex-pros, arguing they violated the spirit of the amateur game.
It is anyone’s guess what the “right” answer to those arguments is. By all accounts, the USGA is still figuring it out. But one answer looked like Shepherd’s face in the winner’s circle on Thursday afternoon, celebrating the biggest victory of her life and a cascading set of opening doors into the biggest events in the women’s game after a life in golf that seemed to suggest it was heading anywhere but.
“Incredible. Feels pretty good to finally get through the week,” she said. “Yeah, it’s pretty surreal, I don’t quite know exactly what I’m feeling, but I’m very excited and very grateful.”
Underdog stories — they’re the hallmark of amateur golf. On Thursday at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, Ivy Shepherd ended a strange week for amateur status with perhaps the best underdog story of them all — a story of belief.
“I mean, I think I proved myself wrong in a lot of ways,” Shepherd said. “I think I’ve always told myself I was somebody who was always pretty good but never quite good enough or couldn’t really handle these big moments.”
Now, she’ll tell herself that from the fairways of the U.S. Women’s Open. Only in golf.
