Masters week is finally here and the pre-tournament odds for the year’s first major championship show a clear-cut favorite.
After winning back-to-back starts last month at two of the PGA Tour’s biggest events — and coming within a five-foot putt of forcing a playoff for a third in a row in his last start — Scottie Scheffler opens Masters week as a +400 favorite to win his second green jacket, according to BetMGM.
If those odds sound absurdly short, it’s because they are. Scheffler’s odds are the shortest pre-tournament odds at Augusta since 2013, when Tiger Woods was a +350 favorite, having won three times before the year’s first major. Not even Jordan Spieth, after winning both the Masters and U.S. Open to start the 2015 major season, had as good of odds to win that year’s Open Championship, as he was +500 at St. Andrews.
When Scheffler won his first green jacket in 2022, he was coming off his first three wins of his PGA Tour career in the two months leading up to the Masters. That week, he opened as a +1600 option with Jon Rahm as the betting favorite at +1000.
Last season in his title defense, Scheffler was the co-favorite with Rory McIlroy at +700.
For this year’s tournament, McIlroy is a distant second favorite at +1000 while Rahm is at +1200. World No. 5 Xander Schauffele (+1600) is the only other golfer with odds shorter than +2000.
Just two weeks ago, Scheffler was a +300 favorite to win the Texas Children’s Houston Open. He was coming off two straight wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. He co-led through 54 holes at Memorial Park but missed a five-foot putt on the 72nd green that would have forced a playoff with Stephan Jaeger to become the first player in seven years to win three PGA Tour events in a row.
But those +300 odds were the lowest for a player on the PGA Tour since 2023, when Rahm made his second start following his Masters win at the Mexico Open. Before that, however, you’d have to go all the way back to 2014 to find a player with that short of odds at a PGA Tour event. Tiger Woods was a +225 favorite when he made his first start of the year at the Farmers Insurance Open following a five-win season in 2013.
