What happens if The Northern Trust can’t finish on Monday due to weather?

PGA Tour pros got a rare day off on Sunday, and they all had different ways they planned to spend it: family time, chipping in the hallway, Netflix, etc. The day off, of course, was due to the threat of Hurricane Henri bringing heavy rain, wind and damage to Liberty National in Jersey City, N.J. So Sunday was called off, with the plan to finish on Monday. But what if Monday isn’t in the cards, either?

The PGA Tour will try to complete the entire final round on Monday — possibly with threesomes off both tees — with tee times beginning no earlier than 7:30 a.m. local. But it is possible, if rough weather still lingers, that the tournament could run into Tuesday — as long as half the players who made the cut complete their rounds on Monday.

As ESPN’s Bob Harig notes, if less than half the field finishes on Monday, those final-round scores would be thrown out and a 54-hole winner crowned. However, there’s still a tie at the top between Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith, so they’d still have to figure out a way for Rahm and Smith to battle it out in a sudden-death playoff.

As of this writing, there’s about a 55-85 percent chance of rain, depending on the time of day, for Jersey City, N.J., on Monday. Unless things change overnight, a Monday finish, albeit a wet one, is likely. For now.
