MEMPHIS — The 11th hole at TPC Southwind, a smaller copy of the famous No. 17 hole at TPC Sawgrass, requires golfers to hit their tee shots over water onto an island green with a small bunker guarding the front edge.
In the first three rounds of WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, only six shots landed in the water. On Sunday, Korean golfer Si Woo Kim hit five straight into the water, scoring a 13 on the par 3.
Kim’s 13 was the highest score recorded on a hole at TPC Southwind in a PGA Tour event, and the highest on a par 3 on the PGA Tour in any tournament (not including majors) since 1983.
After Kim’s first shot landed in the water, he began to hit from the drop zone tee box — 96 yards from the hole. He found the water four more times from that spot before landing in the rough about 21 feet from the hole. From there, Kim pitched to within a foot of the flag for a tap-in 13 on the hole.
Kim came into Sunday 5 over. After his 13, he finished with four birdies and a double bogey to finish with a 78, 8 over for the day, 13 over for the tournament and a last-place finish.
