U.S. Women’s Amateur players to watch, tee times and TV info

After a slightly smaller showing last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a full field of 156 of the best female amateur golfers in the world is bound for New York.

The 121st U.S. Women’s Amateur will be held at Westchester Country Club’s West Course in Rye, New York, Aug. 2-8. The West Course will play 6,488 yards as a par 72, with 36 holes of stroke play before a cut to the low 64 scores for match play. The champion will be decided by a 36-hole final match Sunday, Aug. 8.

This year’s championship will feature a pair of locals, Ina Kim-Schaad from Rhinebeck, New York and Kelly Sim from Edgewater, New Jersey, hitting the first tee shots of the first round on Nos. 1 and 10, respectively. The field also features the group of two-time defending U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur champion Lara Tennant, 2021 U.S. Four-Ball champion Alexa Saldana and Bailey Davis, the recent runner-up at the 2021 U.S. Girls’ Junior.

That said, these three groups stood out among the rest. From the players to watch to tee times and TV info, below you’ll find everything you need to know for next week’s U.S. Women’s Amateur.

Groups to watch

Rose Zhang, Lei Ye and Erica Shepherd

After claiming the U.S. Girls’ Junior earlier this month Zhang is back to defend her U.S. Women’s Amateur title, and she’s got momentum on her side. That said, the world No. 1 and incoming Stanford freshman isn’t the only star player in the group.

Ye, now her college teammate, is coming off a season where she finished as a Golfweek Third Team All-American and member of the All-Pac-12 First Team. The 2019 U.S. Girls’ Junior champion also has a little USGA match play success on her side. And then there’s Shepherd, the 2017 U.S. Girls’ Junior champ and 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball winner (along with Duke teammate Megan Furtney). How’s that for fun?

Megha Ganne, Tsubasa Kajitani and Rachel Heck

This group also features a pair of future Stanford teammates with current Cardinal Heck and Ganne, a commit. In her freshman year, Heck won six events and finished the season on a five win streak ending with the individual national title at the NCAA Championship. She also made the cut at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, as did Ganne, the 17-year-old who earned low-amateur honors and played in the final group on Sunday with Lexi Thompson and champion Yuka Saso. And don’t forget about Kajitani, the 2021 Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion and No. 9 amateur in the world.

Emilia Migliaccio, Brooke Matthews, Kennedy Swann

Migliaccio, a recent Wake Forest graduate who was a two-time All American and five-time winner for the Demon Deacons, has largely put down the clubs recently to work with Golf Channel on her future media career. Swann is still smiling from helping lead her Ole Miss Rebels to the team NCAA Championship earlier this summer. Matthews won the first event of the last college season and continued to play her way to First Team All-SEC honors.
