The U.S. Amateur lands at historic Oakmont (Pennsylvania) Country Club, next week, site of nine previous U.S. Opens.
The Am traditionally marks the end of the summer amateur season, and it all builds up to this. A 312-man field will compete on Oakmont and companion course Longue Vue Club for the first two rounds of stroke play before a cut is made to the top 64 players, then whittled down from there through six rounds of match play.
The winner receives a spot in the U.S. Open, Masters Tournament and British Open, among other perks.
These seven groupings have us most excited going into the opening round:
Alex Fitzpatrick, Ricky Castillo, Cole Hammer
A distinguished group of Walker Cuppers make up this grouping, with Castillo having most notably put together a flawless 4-0 record at Seminole Golf Club in May. He and Hammer represented the victorious U.S. while Fitzpatrick made his second appearance on the Great Britain & Ireland squad.
Charles Osborne, Joe Highsmith, Andrew Kozan
These three men were among the nine amateurs who qualified for the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in June. Highsmith, who plays for Pepperdine, and Kozan, on the Auburn roster, both advanced through sectional qualifying while Osborne earned his spot as the 2020 U.S. Amateur runner-up.
Maxwell Moldovan, Derek Hitchner, Michael Thorbjornsen
Three of the big winners from this summer’s amateur season here. Moldovan broke a scoring record in prevailing at the Southern Amateur while Hitchner charted a massive comeback to win the Trans-Miss Amateur and Thorbjornsen won the big one, the Western Amateur.
Palmer Jackson, William Holcomb V, Cohen Trolio
You might recognize this trio as being quarterfinalists at the 2019 U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst. Holcomb and Trolio also both advanced on to the semifinals that week, and Trolio most recently was the runner-up at this summer’s U.S. Junior.
Devon Bling, Nicholas Dunlap, Trent Phillips
The USGA likes grouping winners together, and this group also has garnered some big accolades this summer. Bling, runner-up at the 2018 U.S. Amateur, won the Pacific Coast Amateur, Dunlap is the reigning U.S. Junior champion and Phillips won the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur in June.
Aman Gupta, Matthew Sharpstene, Stewart Hagestad
Another group of U.S. Amateur quarterfinalists here. These men made the Elite 8 in the 2020 U.S. Amateur at Bandon Dunes. Gupta and Sharpstene advanced to the semifinals.
Keita Nakajima, Pierceson Coody, Ludvig Aberg
And finally, a distinguished group here that includes world No. 1 amateur Nakajima, of Japan, plus a former world No. 1 in Coody, who also was part of the victorious U.S. Walker Cup team. Aberg, currently No. 3 in the world, won the Jones Cup in February.
