These players’ PGA Tour seasons came to an end at the Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. — And then there was one.

Matt Kuchar now owns the distinction of being the only player to qualify for the playoffs in each season since the inception of the FedEx Cup in 2007.

Kuchar finished T-39 at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday and enters the playoffs, which begin next week in Memphis, at No. 60 in the season-long point standings.

This season, only the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings qualify for the first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, down from 125 (2009-2022), which made it much tougher.

After plenty of drama, only one player, tournament winner Lucas Glover advanced to the playoffs and Austin Eckroat, who entered the week at No. 70 but missed the cut, got knocked out.

Justin Thomas, meanwhile, was the odd-man out at No. 71.

Adam Scott’s run is over. He missed the playoffs for the first time in his career, finishing one shot shy of a playoff berth in 72nd place.

Scott put up a good fight, finishing T-12 at 12-under 268. He carded eight birdies on Sunday, including four in his final six holes. When he signed for 7-under 63, he was straddling the line in 70th place. By the time he started his post-round interview, he had slipped to 72 and after he finished he had fallen to 73. But Scott wasn’t dwelling on having his season come to a premature end.

“I think it’s a good thing,” Scott said of the end of the streak. “I think it gives me a good chance to have a look at what I need to do differently to be more competitive in whatever competition I’m playing in.”

Thompson, a rookie this season, shot 1-under 69 on Sunday to finish at 8-under 272 and T-22. He figured he needed a few more birdies.

“My goal was to get to 12 under today and I figured that would be a good number to get to to have a chance,” he said.

Thompson finished No. 73 in the standings.

“It’s tough, but oh, well,” Thompson said.

Horschel shot 62, the lowest round of his career on Friday and backed it up with 63 on Saturday to grab a share of the 54-hole lead, but he couldn’t post a third low round.

Horschel bogeyed the first hole and didn’t make a birdie on Sunday until 18. He posted 72 and finished in fourth. Horschel, the 2014 FedEx Cup champion, entered the week at No. 116 and needed to win or finish no worse than a two-way tie for second.

While Horschel missed out on the top 70 and the playoffs, he said he has a family vacation scheduled to the Bahamas, so he’s got that going for him.

Shane Lowry, the 2019 British Open champion, started the week with work to do and made the cut but never made a move on the weekend, shooting 3-under 277 and finishing T-51. He ended the season at No. 78. Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, started the week at No. 97 and finished T-22. He ended the season at No. 94 in the standings.
