The chassis of the P790 is cast from 8620 carbon steel, and the L-shaped face is forged from 4140 stainless steel, a much harder material. At some points, the face is as thin as 1.5 millimeters, which allows it to flex more efficiently at the moment of impact to deliver more ball speed.
By wrapping the face under the leading edge and adding a Speed Pocket slot in the sole of the P790, TaylorMade is able to protect ball speed on low-struck shots more effectively.
TaylorMade designers also studied how and where golfers mis-hit iron shots on the face, and tried to optimize the sweet spot in those areas, which run from the low-heel to the high-toe.
Doing these things made the sweet spot 60 percent larger, so while accomplished players looking for more distance will get it, golfers who need some forgiveness will find more of it in 2021 P790.
