Rickie Fowler: What I learned from Arnold Palmer (and favorite memories with The King)

Arnold Palmer hits out of a sand trap at the first hole as the 1980 Masters Golf Tournament got underway at the Augusta National Golf Club, Thursday, April 10, 1980, Augusta, Ga.

If you’re going to get to play one round and one round only with Palmer, there are worse places to tee it up than the famed Seminole Golf Club.

Fowler recalled it was either 2011 or 2012 and Father Time had finally gotten the better of Palmer’s game but not for one memorable bunker shot on the 11th hole from about 50 yards short of the green.

“He walked in there, hardest shot in golf, and hit this perfect, little clipped gap wedge up there,” Fowler said. “It was an amazing shot, his way of just saying I’ve still got it.”

Fowler’s fondest memory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational happens to have occurred after a low moment. Fowler was battling with Tiger Woods in the final round for the title when he found the water at 16 and made a triple bogey to ruin his chances. He eventually finished T-3, but afterwards he sat in the locker room and enjoyed a drink with Palmer and Woods.

“That’s a memory that I’ll always have,” Fowler said. “One of these years, it would be cool to have a different outcome and have a drink and toast him up top.”
