The Tuxedo Club just north of New York City has undertaken a renovation of its Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed golf course, with Rees Jones and Bryce Swanson having completed a master plan to transform the club.
Founded in 1886 in Tuxedo Park, New York, the private Tuxedo Club introduced a six-hole course in 1889, then a nine-holer in 1892 that was later expanded to 18. In 1956, Jones Sr. completed a new nine several miles away, then finished the 18-hole layout the next year.
Rees Jones, son of Jones Sr., plans to bring the course “back to the future” by repositioning, reimagining and renovating fairway and greenside bunkers in his father’s original style. The project is intended to refurbish the layout’s classic looks while modernizing the entire course. The project includes the creation of a new short-game practice area, a new ninth hole and the re-grassing of all necessary greens surrounds.
“When I was younger, I remember my father’s excitement when he was given the opportunity to design the golf course for the Tuxedo Club,” Rees Jones, who has restored more than two dozen of his father’s courses, said in a media release announcing the renovation. “Dad knew that he had a wonderful site from which to work. The setting and flow of the holes were ideal for the creation of a minimalistic golf course that would stand the test of time.”
The project is slated to be completed in May.
“Over the past several years we have been working hand in hand with Rees Jones on course improvement designs that we believe will take the Tuxedo Club golf experience to the next level,” Tuxedo Club general manager Randy St. John said in the media statement. “Construction began in late October and already significant progress has been made, specifically on our new short game practice area and new ninth hole.”
