PGA Tour Champions 2022 schedule features record money, strong rookie class

For 42 years the PGA Tour Champions has provided some of golf’s best players a second chance to compete at a high level and for a big payday. With a strong rookie class and the highest prize money to date, 2022 is shaping up to be a big year for the senior circuit.

On Tuesday the PGA Tour Champions announced its 28-event schedule for the 2022 season that will span 20 states and three countries. A record $62 million in total prize money will be up for grabs and each event will be televised on Golf Channel, with three scheduled for weekend coverage on NBC: the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, the Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex and the U.S. Senior Open.

The 2022 rookie class is highlighted by 13-time PGA Tour winner and former world No. 1 David Duval (who is expected to make his Champions Tour debut at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in January), five-time Tour winner Brian Gay (eligible December 14, 2021) and 12-time winner on Tour Justin Leonard (eligible June 15, 2022).

“As we wrap up the historic 2020-21 combined season, we are excited to share next year’s schedule with our players, fans and partners who enjoy watching golf’s greatest legends compete on PGA Tour Champions,” said president Miller Brady via a release. “Our 2022 schedule features the return of three events – the Trophy Hassan II in Rabat, Morocco, the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California, and the Rapiscan Systems Classic in Biloxi, Mississippi – and we look forward to continuing to share the game of golf with our fans at some of the world’s top courses.”

The Trophy Hassan II is one of three events outside the United States, as well as the U.S. Senior Open in Scotland and the Shaw Charity Classic in Canada.

The 2022 season will begin with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii, Jan. 17-22, and end with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix, Nov. 7-13. Next year the Champions tour will return to Newport Beach, California, for the Hoag Classic, which was cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19, as well as welcome a new event in April, the the ClubCorp Classic at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. The format will match PGA Tour Champions players with celebrities and amateur golfers.

The senior schedule features five major championships held in a seven-week span from early May to mid July.
