Last August, less than one year after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer in his left thigh, University of Kentucky golfer Cullan Brown passed away at just 20 years old.
Almost a year to the day later, the former Wildcat’s legacy will forever be etched in history at his home course.
On Monday afternoon, the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet will formally rename Mineral Mound State Park Golf Course in Eddyville, Kentucky, as The Cullan at Mineral Mound State Park. The ceremony will include a ceremonial tee shot from Cullan’s sister, Cathryn.
Before heading to Lexington, Brown was a state champion in 2016 and named Kentucky’s player of the year. A member of the All-SEC Freshman Team in 2019, Brown earned four top-20 finishes in seven starts for the Wildcats. He also appeared in the PGA Tour’s 2019 Barbasol Championship, where he finished T-53 at 10 under at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
“It’d be hard to believe for him. The humble guy he is, he’d probably think he didn’t deserve it. But in reality, there isn’t anyone who would deserve it more, the legacy Cullan has left behind.”

Just week’s after making the Barbasol cut, Kentucky announced Brown would be stepping away from the 2019-20 season to start chemotherapy.
Off the course, Brown was an avid reader and cook, and had a knack for making people smile.
“He’s the most beloved kid I’ve ever had,” Wildcats head coach Brian Craig once told Golfweek, “times 20 probably.”
