Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris will need at least three more holes to decide the 2022 PGA Championship.

Thomas and Zalatoris used late surges to catch 54-hole leader Mito Pereira and get into a playoff to decide the second major of the year. The PGA Championship uses a three-hole aggregate, with pros playing holes 13, 17 and 18 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., and the lowest total score winning.

Pereira held the 54-hole lead at nine under and led by one with two to play, but his drive on the par-4 18th found the creek and his approach from there went long and left of the green. He made double bogey and finished a shot out of a playoff.

Thomas, who opened the day seven off the lead, shot 67, tied for the low round of the day, and held the clubhouse lead. Zalatoris, who was three back to start the day, joined him thanks to a clutch birdie on the 17th and eight-foot par save on the 18th to shoot 71. They were both in at five under, and as soon at Pereira couldn’t get up and down from off the green on 18, Thomas and Zalatoris prepared for their playoff.
