Jordan Poyer of Buffalo Bills cancels golf event at Trump National in Doral

Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer is canceling his annual golf charity event at the Blue Monster at Trump National in Doral, Florida, he announced on his Instagram on Saturday.

Poyer cited that the event had to be rescheduled until next year because teams and sponsors pulled out due to its location.

He initially shared his excitement for the tournament, being held at one of his favorite courses, before explaining why he had to cancel it.

“Unfortunately, there have been a numerous amount of teams up north that have pulled out of the tournament. Not just out of the tournament but also wrote e-mails to a big sponsor that was going to help sponsor my tournament,” Poyer said on Instagram. “And that company now, it’s unfortunate that they have pulled out and decided that they don’t want to take part in my tournament, in which they took part in last year, because of where it’s at, the Trump National in Doral.”

The event was set to benefit the ECMC Foundation and Poyer described ECMC as a major sponsor. He explained that he had worked with the group for more than a year.

A ECMC spokesperson told the Buffalo News that the foundation was only a beneficiary and not a sponsor. Susan Gonzalez, the ECMC Foundation executive director, confirmed they were just a beneficiary and told the Buffalo News in a statement: “We have had an excellent partnership with Jordan and we respect his decision to cancel his tournament.”

According to its website, ECMC “is a nationally-focused foundation working to improve higher education for career success among underserved populations through evidence-based innovation.”

Poyer did not make clear how many teams and people dropped out. He did express his disappointment that groups were unable to put politics aside to benefit the cause of his event.

“I hoped we could kind of get past that and I thought that we did. It seems that we haven’t and it seems that this is, even just the way America is right now. It seems like our egos kind of get in the way of being a good human being,” he said on Instagram. “And that’s sharing love, sharing conversations, sharing laughter’s with others that may not believe in the same things that you do.”
