Is this Texas school about to build the best golf college facility in Division II? Maybe so

Angelo State University in Texas has received a $5.2 million gift from an anonymous donor to fund construction of an all-inclusive new golf facility, according to a news release.

The school sits in the city of San Angelo, which is about three hours west of Austin. The Angelo State Golf Complex will be on the east side of the ASU campus.

“The complex will include a state-of-the-art, 3,600-square-foot building, an extensive patio area and an outdoor short-game golf course,” the release stated.

The building will house golf training areas, including swing simulators, hitting bays, locker rooms, offices, restrooms and a 1,420-square-foot general-use area that will include a golf simulator.

The general-use area will also have fold-up doors that look out onto an approximately 1,250-square-foot covered patio, 1,250 square feet of additional patio space, and the short-game golf course.

“The short-game course will feature synthetic turf, six greens and real sand bunkers,” the release stated. “The farthest green will be 175 yards from the tee line, with the remaining greens at varying distances up to 125 yards.”

This is being designed by Weibring Wolfard Golf Design in Plano and will be built by Houston-based Greenscapes Six and Dallas-based Premier Greens.

The Complex will provide an on-campus facility for the ASU Rambelles golf team to train daily in all the different facets of their game.

“A facility like this will allow us to take our golf program to the next level,” said James Reid, ASU athletic director.

“It will be a top-notch facility that will rival anything you see at our counterparts in the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II, and even many Division I programs,” Reid said. “It will be a great benefit to our current team and also enhance our ability to recruit and retain future Rambelles golfers.”

ASU President Ronnie Hawkins Jr. said ASU is already recognized for having some of the best athletics facilities in Division II for many of its intercollegiate sports.

“When this phase of the new complex is completed, the same will be said about our golf program,” Hawkins said.

“Many of our facilities were constructed or significantly enhanced through generous funding from individual and corporate donors, and we are incredibly grateful to our newest donor because the Angelo State Golf Complex will have a dynamic impact on our golf program, the campus, and especially our student-athletes, both now and long into the future,” he said.

The Rambelles golf team debuted in 2007 and is in the midst of the 2024 season leading up to the Lone Star Conference Championship in April.

Construction on the Angelo State Golf Complex is scheduled to begin this month and be completed this fall, according to the release.
