I’m just going to come out and say it: I despise bunker shots.

It’s not even that I hate playing from the sand as much as I fear it. As soon as I see a green that’s surrounded by sand, I tense up and do anything I can to avoid the trap. If that means laying up, so be it.

Sure, this isn’t the greatest strategy, as the lack of aggressiveness often costs me any chance at putting for birdie, but it’s better than the possible alternative — which is hitting my ball into a trap, and then hacking away at it from the sand, taking 2-3 shots to even exit a bunker.

I’m going to bet a lot of amateurs can relate with this scenario, with bunker shots frequently causing players to adjust their games for the worst — which adds stress and possible shots to your round.

If you’re in need of some bunker drills to help improve your game, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Brech Spradley offers a simple solution.

The $100 bill bunker drill

In the video below, Spradley lays down a $100 bill beneath in the trap. No, it’s not to show how much cash he’s carrying in his wallet, but, instead, to demonstrate the proper length of the drag of the club in the sand.

Whether you want to use a $100 bill or a $1 bill is up to you. The most important thing is to see consistency with each swing, making sure the bill flutters out of the bunker towards your target, landing safely on the grass in front of you.

So instead of practicing with a ball from the sand, this $100 bill bunker drill will help you develop the correct technique, using the bounce of your club, ensuring a more accurate shot. Plus, it’s quick, easy, and won’t leave you frustrated by spraying a bunch of practice balls all over the place. Give it a try!
