The new 2021-22 season on the PGA Tour begins this week with the 2021 Fortinet Championship at Silverado Resort & Spa in Napa, Calif. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament.
Fortinet Championship preview
This year technically marks the debut of the Fortinet Championship, but only in name. The long-running PGA Tour event at Silverado Resort’s North Course has gone by several monikers in the past, most recently the Safeway Open. But Fortinet struck a six-year deal last year to take over as title sponsor, and a somewhat surprising star-studded field has signed on to make the inaugural event a memorable one.
Despite completing a second-place finish in the Tour Championship an FedEx Cup two weeks ago, World No.1 Jon Rahm is teeing it up in Napa this week to keep his streak of hot play going. He’ll be far and away the favorite to take home his seventh PGA Tour title this week.
But he’s not the only 2020 major winner in the field at Silverado Resort. Fifty-one-year-old Phil Mickelson, who shocked the world by winning the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, will tee it up in his home state of California this week. Once Mickelson and Rahm sink their final putts at the Fortinet, they’ll both head straight to Wisconsin for the Ryder Cup, where Rahm will be playing on the European squad and Mickelson will be an assistant captain for the U.S. side.
