The 2023 Open Championship purse has increased significantly over the years.
Just two years ago, in 2021, the purse was set at $11.5 million. One year later, it went up again, to $14 million. Both increases were record payouts for the Open at the time, and this year, the R&A announced another big jump.
In 2023, the Open Championship purse is set at a whopping total of $16.5 million. Despite the increases, the Open is still the least lucrative of the major championships. The U.S. Open tops the list at $20 million, followed by the Masters ($18 million) and the PGA Championship ($17.5 million). The Players Championship remains the richest purse in golf at a total of $25 million.
It’s a good time to be a pro golfer, to say the least.
This year’s Open champion will surpass the payout received by 2022 champion, Cameron Smith, by an impressive $500,000, with a $3 million total payday. The runner-up will receive a cool $1.708 million, and third place will clear seven figures too, with a payout of $1.095 million.
Even the players who missed the cut receive a payout ranging from $12,000 to $8,500, depending on their finish through 36 holes. So how much did the rest of the players in the field come away with this year? You can find a complete list of the 2023 U.S. Open payouts for each player below.
