Wie West’s dream to play the Masters ended in a quarterfinal loss at the U.S. Amateur Public Links. The winner of the now-defunct USGA event historically received an invitation to compete in Augusta, Georgia.
To start, Wie West had to become the first woman to qualify for an adult male USGA event. She did that by tying for first in a sectional qualifier. After that, she shot 76-72 to become the first woman to qualify for match play.
The 15-year-old Wie West eventually lost to Clay Ogden, a BYU junior, who birdied four of the first five holes in their quarterfinal match. Ogden, who eventually went on to win the championship, gained instant fame for beating the phenom.
