What to look for in an ideal rangefinder
Laser rangefinder use a laser beam aimed at the target to determine its distance, while GPS rangefinders use a network of satellites to establish the distance from the device to a certain place on the course.
How far can the rangefinder read? Laser rangefinders use a determined target (your ball, the flag, front of green, back of green etc.) to scope yardages. Some rangefinders can read over 900 yards.
This is the average level of accuracy of distnace readings, tested and proven by manufacturers. Ideal rangefinders are accurate within +/- 1 yard or so on distance readings. More expensive models can be as accurate as +/- .5 yards.
A great feature for playing hilly courses, rangefinders with slope readings can adjust your yardage reading based on how much incline or decline is between you and the hole. Most rangefinders with a slope adjustment mode can be toggled on and off to allow the rangefinder to be legally used in tournament play.
