While we were on the grounds at Detroit Golf Club, in Detroit, Mich. earlier this week to take in the sights and sounds of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, we also got our fill of some local fare. Here’s our pre-tournament gear wrap-up from the event, as well as some extra equipment news taking place in Bedminster, NJ at the LIV Golf event.
LIV Golf’s new trailer
Kevin Na’s caddie Kenny Harms shared some breaking news on Instagram that LIV Golf has bought and outfitted its own tour equipment trailer to help players with any gear issues that might come up. Considering no OEM has made any commitment to service players outside of PGA Tour events using a trailer, this could be the perfect solution for a field limited to 48 players.
Replacement clubs for those lost in the abyss
Multiple players arrived on Monday to new sets of clubs waiting for them in their respective equipment trailers since their current sets were nowhere to be found. Former world No. 1 Luke Donald was among those that were without clubs thanks to a baggage issue overseas.

Ryan Moore testing irons and weighting
Noted gear junkie Ryan Moore was seen on the range with a plethora of clubs against his staff bag on Tuesday piecing together his clubs for this week. Club head weight seemed to be the biggest concern for Ryan since he was experimenting with various CTP (Custom Tuning Port) weights in the back of Ping S55’s.
As a signed Callaway staffer for 2022, it’s an interesting move to see him testing irons from a different manufacturer.
New PXG irons for Henrik Norlander
It’s been a big week for irons and Henrik Norlander got in on the action by debuting a new set of PXG 0317ST blades. When speaking with the tour team at PXG, the biggest thing for this new set was getting the looks and bounce right for Henrik, and so far they have been a hit with the Swede.
Adam Hadwin talking wedges with more bounce
Another player back from the Open Championship and looking to get reacquainted with softer conditions this week is Adam Hadwin, who was requesting a new grind with more bounce for his wedges to prevent excess digging.
Adam Scott grinding over sole grinds
It was only a couple of months ago at the Memorial when Adam Scott put a custom set of Miura irons into play in preparation for the Open Championship.
On the range this week in much softer conditions, Adam was spotted talking with Mizuno techs about the sole grind of the Mizuno Pro 221 blades compared to his Miura’s and his preference for slightly wider soled irons. During the conversation, Adam referenced a number of historic Mizuno models that he liked in the past including the MP 29s based on sole shapes, and let me just say, this guy knows what he likes and has a great memory for clubs.
Whether a new set will make it into play or not is still to be seen, but we will keep an eye out for a potential switch.
DL3 getting dialed into the new Titleist TRS woods
U.S. Presidents Cup Captain Davis Love III was working with the Titleist crew to get set up with new TSR metal woods, including the driver and fairway woods. Although he plays a limited schedule on tour, DLIII can still move it off the tee, and with President’s Cup hopeful Max Homa in the field, Davis is likely keeping an eye on more things than just his launch conditions this week.
Comerica Park – Play ball
If you are headed to Detroit make sure to try and schedule a Tigers game at Comerica Park. As a fan of baseball and a good stadium, my entry-level $25 ticket was worth admission to walk around and soak up the vibe. I would like to also note I stayed well away from the line drive section — you know, just in case.
Detroit style lives up to the hype.
As someone that has almost never met a pizza he didn’t like, I’m happy to report that Detroit-style pizza fully lived up to expectations — the light, buttery, fluffy crust with a crunch absolutely delivered. Now with just a couple of FedEx Cup regular season events left, we just need to stay tuned to the Rocket Mortgage Classic to find out who will deliver a win on Sunday!
