Final qualifying: Check out who played their way into the 2022 U.S. Open field

Like Father, like son.

Sean Jacklin, 30, the son of two-time major winner Tony Jacklin, winner of the 1970 U.S. Open at Hazeltine, shot 5-under 137 to earn co-medalist honors at the US Open Sectional Qualifying at The Club at Admiral’s Cove (North and West Courses) in Jupiter, Fla.

Jacklin has made exactly one career PGA Tour start, five starts on the Korn Ferry Tour and a few tries on PGA Tour LatinoAmerica. Now he’ll make his first start in a major at The Country Club next week in Brookline, Mass. Jacklin reached 9 under with five birdies on his front nine in the afternoon to build a cushion and needed it as he made four bogeys on the way to the house.

A total of 78 players were vying for four spots into the 122nd U.S. Open.

Ryan Gerard of Raleigh, N.C., who last week wrapped up his fifth season at North Carolina, withdrew from a PGA Tour Canada event to try to qualify for his national championship and made the most of his opportunity, shooting 66 in the morning and even-par 71 in the afternoon to tie Jacklin for medalist honors.

Keith Greene, 29, of DeBary, Fla., followed a 1-under 70 with 17 bogey-free holes before having to wait out a 50-minute rain delay. “That was nerve-wracking,” he said.

Despite a bogey at the last, he posted 68 in the afternoon. The former Lynn University golfer who had status on PGA Tour Latinoamerica in 2020-21 and the Mackenzie Tour in 2018, will be making his first appearance in a PGA Tour event.

“This is a dream,” he said. “It doesn’t even feel real. I’m just going to try to soak it In now.”

Amateur Fred Biondi overcame a morning 72 by shooting a bogey-free 67 to grab the fourth and final spot with a 36-hole total of 3-under 139. A redshirt senior in the fall at University of Florida, Biondi also earned his first appearance in the U.S. Open.

Rickie Fowler, the headliner of the qualifying site, got off to a shaky start and was 3-over par through his first five holes. He ended up shooting 73 but battled back to card 67 in the afternoon and post 2-under 140.

“You show up today and there are no excuses,” said Fowler. “Left it all out there and played a nice round of golf in the afternoon in the wind.”

Fowler will be part of an 8-man playoff to determine the first and second alternate. That playoff won’t be held until Tuesday morning as a 50-minute weather delay foiled efforts to hold a playoff. The other participants will be Matthias Schwab, Tom Lewis, Steve Marino, Spencer Mellon and amateur Brett Roberts.

Matthew Wolff, the 2020 U.S. Open runner-up and T-15 finisher last year at Torrey Pines, just missed qualifying based on his world ranking but withdrew on Monday after 26 holes and won’t be part of the field this time around.
