FedEx Cup Playoffs: A closer look at PGA Tour players on the top-70 bubble ahead of the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship

The FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway Thursday in Memphis, Tennessee, at the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind. That means only the top 125 players from the PGA Tour regular season points race qualified and are shooting for the season-long prize, the FedEx Cup.

Only 121 players will tee it up and from there, only the top 70 in the standings advance to the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware.

From there, the top 30 move to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, with the playoffs champion earning $18 million in bonus money.

Here’s a closer look at some names in the FedEx Cup points standings, including those who are on the bubble and others who need a big week to make the BMW Championship.

Trey Mullinax, as of now, is the last man who would make the BMW Championship, sitting at 70th in the standings at 589.859 points. Yet the distance between he and 71st place is less than four points. The winner of the 2022 Barbasol Championship, Mullinax has only one other top-10 finish on the season, but a made cut will go a long way to him playing another week.

Sitting right behind Mullinax is Brandon Wu, a PGA Tour rookie who finished T-8 at the Wyndham Championship last week. That vaulted him up eight spots in the standings. Wu has a second- and third-place finish this season in addition to four top 10s. Another strong performance would put him well inside the top-70 cutline.

2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic

It has been an up-and-down season for Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open Champion. He had consecutive T-5 finishes at the Honda Classic and Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he has missed the cut in four of his past six starts, including his most recent at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He sits 16 points behind 70th place and is in 73rd, needing to finish at least 64th or better to advance.

The steady Adam Scott had put together another strong season, making the cut in all but two of his starts. Yet heading into the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he sits outside of the top 70 in 77th. Trailing the final spot by nearly 40 points, Scott will need to finish at least 47th or better to advance.

Since finishing solo third at the Charles Schwab Challenge in late may, Brendon Todd has played only five times, but a strong season has him at 68th in the standings heading into this week. He’s only three points ahead of 70th. If Todd, who has made the cut in four of his past five events, somehow doesn’t play the weekend, his season could be over.

2022 Masters

Justin Rose, the 2018 FedEx Cup Champion, has plenty of work to do if he wants to play in the BMW Championship. He sits at 94th in the standings, but he has made the cut in six of his past seven starts and four straight, including a tie for fourth at RBC Canadian Open. He has to finish at least 26th to advance.

Jason Day finished tied for 17th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic two weeks ago only to withdraw at the Wyndham Championship last week after a 3-under 67 in the first round. He sits at 113th in the standings and will need a top-16 finish or better to play at the BMW Championship.

2022 Wyndham Championship

Rickie Fowler missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship yet somehow found his way into the field at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The path to the BMW Championship is simple for Fowler, as he must finish at least 11th or better. Problem is, that’s something he hasn’t been able to do since a T-3 at the CJ Cup last October. Could this week be a turning point?
