When it comes to iconic American apparel, you’d be hard-pressed to find a brand that epitomizes red, white and blue with more flag-waving fulsomeness than Ralph Lauren, which in 2023 celebrates 55 years in business.

The company launched its first tie collection in 1967 and quickly became one of the most esteemed fashion empires in the United States. It is an established purveyor of aspirational, sophisticated and quintessentially American apparel and lifestyle products, so there’s really no more obvious candidate to provide Team USA’s uniforms for various international competitions, a role the company has embraced for nearly four decades. This year is no exception, as Ralph Lauren will again step up to the plate as the official outfitter for the American team and staff at the Ryder Cup in Rome in September.

It goes without saying that creating a week’s worth of looks for scores of team, family and staff is no small task, and, for Ralph Lauren’s designers, work begins long before the Ryder Cup team itself takes shape. While several team members are obvious locks in the months leading up to the competition, participation is never a given. Injuries are always a possibility, and this year’s American team will include six captain’s picks — players who won’t be revealed until right before the Ryder Cup is played. That’s why, at May’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill, Ralph Lauren prepared for just about every eventuality by creating a bespoke tailoring experience for dozens of pros, caddies and PGA executives to help ensure that custom-fit uniforms and apparel for those who make the squad will be ready upon arrival in Rome.

This year marks the fifth consecutive Ryder Cup in which Team USA will be outfitted by Ralph Lauren, and the 2023 collection is at once familiar and fresh with polos that incorporate Uncle Sam–inspired color blocking and thick horizontal stripes as well as classic silhouettes. “This year our uniform showcases a modern Americana spirit with a red, white and blue palette, featuring special patriotic details and crafted with innovative performance fabri- cations,” says David Lauren, chief branding and innovation officer at Ralph Lauren. “Our golf apparel is designed with functionality, performance and style top of mind, both on and off the course.”

Ralph Lauren’s offerings for Team USA don’t stop with tournament wear. The brand is also providing made-to-measure suits for the entire American contingent, which they’ll showcase at the welcome dinner and the opening ceremony in Italy. “Our apparel is thoughtfully designed to ensure players look and feel their best when representing Team USA,” Lauren says.

With a number of Tour stars on Ralph Lauren’s endorsement roster — including Team USA’s captain, Zach Johnson, and vice captain Davis Love III (a brand partner for three decades!) — Ralph Lauren is advantageously positioned to provide garments for the team that have already been proven at the highest level.

One customization that this year’s roster can look forward to is an addition from captain Johnson, who requested that “Twelve Strong,” Team USA’s motto, be written in Italian on select items.

Lucky for the fashion forward, many of the pieces will eventually be available for purchase. Fans of previous uniforms may recall how the 2021 collection’s navy cashmere hoodie (right) stole the show. According to Lauren, it reappears in this year’s rotation. “We are excited to bring back an updated version of the hoodie as one of the layering pieces for this year’s tournament,” he says.

A Ralph Lauren golf hoodie? That’s about as American as it gets.
