To say it was a good start for Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele would be putting it lightly.
Both players from California shot 8-under 62 out of the morning wave Thursday at the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. The scores were the lowest in the 123-year history of the U.S. Open, and they tied the major championship record, which Branden Grace set in the third round of the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
However, outside of Fowler and Schauffele’s stellar starts, the next best rounds in the morning wave at LACC were 3-under 67s shot by the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and others.
U.S. Open: Leaderboard, tee times, hole-by-hole
However, that didn’t prevent fans on Twitter complaining about the course and its setup, which is one of the more unique in U.S. Open history.
Here’s a look at what some of those golf fans thought about LACC during the first round.
Please make it a proper test, else I am turning off

Guess you’ll have to tighten up your setup a bit there LACC.

10 birdies and 2 bogeys. Course is a joke for a US Open venue. LACC is an elitist place that is too good for fans. This will be the last US Open at LACC. It’s a goat ranch.

Make it harder. Nobody wants a -25 US Open Champ. It’s supposed to be difficult no?

Clearly the course is set up too easy this year.

Bring back difficult US Opens.

Great round, but I tune into the US Open to see the ultimate test. Not just a regular PGA tour venue. Let’s see how the rest of the week goes but this looks a lame course for a US Open.
