While much of the golf world’s attention will be on classic Scottish golf courses this year, with the British Open returning in July to the Old Course at St. Andrews on the country’s eastern coast, there’s much to check out elsewhere in the country. And in the case of one course on the western coast of Scotland, it’s all about what’s new.
Dundonald Links in Gailes – located less than an hour southwest of Glasgow and site of this year’s Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open on August 13-16 – has in the past year added greatly to the property, to the tune of some 25 million pounds in capital investment. The club upgraded the Kyle Phillips-designed course and introduced multiple options for accommodations that include 18 luxury lodges and 22 hotel rooms near the new clubhouse that replaced a somewhat famous portakabin building and that features views of Ailsa Craig. The new lodges offer layouts with two, four or six bedrooms.
“We are confident that the investment by (new club owner) Darwin Escapes marks Dundonald Links as one of the UK’s finest resort offerings, and we look forward to providing our unique blend of facilities and hospitality to golf travelers from across the world in 2022 and beyond,” said Dundonald Links club manager Ian Ferguson in a recent media release.
Opened in 2003, Dundonald Links ranks No. 30 on Golfweek’s Best list of best modern courses in Great Britain and Ireland. It hosted the Women’s Scottish Open in 2015, 2016 and 2017. It also was site of the DP World Tour’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open in 2017.
