What made the previous Spider putters popular is they shifted weight to the back heel and toe areas, so on mis-hit putts the face was more stable and putts rolled out well. With Spider GT, TaylorMade is trying to take that concept up a notch. The center of the putter is milled from 6061 aluminum, an exceptionally light material. Referred to as an Internal Mass Pad, the center of the putter weighs just 145 grams.
On either side are a pair of steel bars that extend back in the heel and toe, which have tungsten in the back. In total there are 90 grams of weight on either side of the aluminum body. Put another way, TaylorMade said the middle of the putter constitutes only 18 percent of the head’s weight while 82 percent is evenly split on either side. In the original Spider, 40 percent of the head’s weight was in the center while the heel and toe accounted for 30 percent each.
TaylorMade said that with more weight than ever on the perimeter, the Spider GT is the most stable, most-forgiving Spider yet.
