Some photographs in golf require no caption. Take the image of a tousled swath of linksland along the Atlantic, watched over by a lighthouse with a humpbacked rock looming just offshore and a hotel perched on the hillside above it all. This is Trump Turnberry, a four-time host of the Open Championship and several prestigious amateur events.
The Ailsa Course ranks 18th in GOLF’s Top 100 Courses in the World, while the award-winning King Robert the Bruce offers a distinct challenge alongside it. Both courses have been transformed by Martin Ebert, most recently the Ailsa in 2025, strengthening Turnberry’s standing as a world-class golf destination.
You don’t have to have been there to recognize Trump Turnberry. But still, a little reconnaissance can’t hurt before you go.
Next month, the resort will add another line to its resume when it hosts the Bridges Cup, a three-day, 24-player elite mid-amateur competition pitting 12 U.S. players against 12 international team members in three days of four-balls, foursomes and singles matches. Now in its fourth edition, the event is making its first trip to Scotland, touching down on an unmistakable stage. Before the matches get underway, here’s a glance at Trump Turnberry’s rich history and eight facts that make it a must-visit today.
1. The main event
Set on Scotland’s west coast, where the Atlantic pounds the shore and the dunes rise and fall in restless shapes, Trump Turnberry’s championship Ailsa Course occupies a grand swath of golf ground. But it took time for the layout to assume its current form. Born in 1901, it was put to military use during World War I and saw its fairways flattened into airstrips during World War II.
In the early 1950s, Mackenzie Ross rebuilt the course essentially from scratch, creating a routing that still forms the backbone of the Ailsa. The layout opens in the dunes before moving to a stirring stretch along the coast, where the lighthouse looms over the 9th green, then skirts the bluffs again on its path home.
In 2016, Ebert elevated the already vaunted layout to another level, making fuller use of the jagged coastline. The famed 9th tee near the lighthouse stayed in place, but the semi-blind, turtleback fairway it once fed did not survive the redesign. In its place rose a dramatic new par 3 running hard along the cliffs. The 10th, once a par 4, grew into a demanding par 5, and the 11th shifted closer to the water. Ebert also trimmed the 6th to make room for a new back tee at the home hole, sharpening the closing stretch. In 2025, Ebert fine-tuned the Ailsa yet again, lowering the fairway on the par-4 7th, which now bends more sharply left toward a rebuilt horizon green set closer to the coast, backed by ocean views. The 8th tee was also shifted farther inland to align with changes to the 7th hole.
2. The stuff of legend
Trump Turnberry has hosted The Open four times, but the first occasion, in 1977, remains the most fabled. With a final-round 65, Tom Watson edged Jack Nicklaus by a stroke in what became known as “The Duel in the Sun,” a sun-splashed battle that endures as one of the game’s most indelible events. The clubhouse restaurant is named for the pair, a cap-tip to an unforgettable week. Another page in Trump Turnberry lore involves a what might have been, and Watson was a central character in that, too. In 2009, at age 59, he came within a whisker of winning a sixth Claret Jug, losing in a playoff to Stewart Cink.
3. An iconic hotel
Opened in 1906, the hotel predates the modern Ailsa by decades and has kept watch over the coastline for more than a century. Originally a railway hotel, it served as a military hospital during both world wars and has hosted a number of high-level political summits and U.S. presidential visits dating back to the Eisenhower administration.
The Trump Organization acquired the property in 2014 and it underwent a sweeping restoration. The hotel’s 103 rooms and suites were overhauled, public spaces were refreshed and expanded and new dining and event spaces were added, including the 1906 restaurant and a ballroom. The resort also landed a spot on GOLF’s most recent Top 100 Resorts in the World list.
4. A room with a view
Built in 1873 by Thomas Stevenson, father of novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, Trump Turnberry’s famous lighthouse stands on the ruins of Turnberry Castle, which tradition holds was the birthplace of Scottish king and national hero Robert the Bruce, who liberated the country from England in the early 1300s. These days, the lighthouse serves a more luxurious purpose. Its upper floors contain a two-bedroom suite with sweeping views across the course and out toward Ailsa Craig.

5. The greatest turnstand in golf?
The ground floor of the lighthouse is given over to golfers, not overnight guests. It serves as a halfway stop between the 9th green and 10th tee, with the wild coast spreading out in the distance. Not a bad place to grab a cup of soup, Scottish confectionery or shot of whisky. Or all of the above.
6. A second course fit for a king
Formerly known as Kintyre, the Ailsa’s sibling course reopened in 2017 as the King Robert the Bruce after a substantial renovation that was also led by Ebert. The project added four new holes on Bain’s Hill, including par 5s at Nos. 8 and 11, a cliff-edge par 4 at No. 9 and a par-3 10th. Elsewhere, Ebert introduced a new wetland, expanded sandy waste areas, opened coastal views by clearing gorse and trees and reworked bunkers throughout. The burn on the first hole was removed, while the 18th green was lowered to make it more receptive.
7. When 36 holes isn’t enough
Golf takes many forms at Trump Turnberry. Steps from the hotel lie both the Caingorms putting green and the Wee Links pitch and putt, sweet spots to hone your short game while enjoying a dram with your pals. Then there’s Trump’s Twelve, a 12-hole, par-3 course, opened in August 2026 and featuring holes that range from 70 to 206 yards. Multiple teeing grounds, wavy greens, sandy waste areas and water hazards add variety and intrigue to a short-course test designed to serve a broad audience, from beginners and families to accomplished players looking to dial in their wedges.
8. A high-tech learning center
History runs deep at the resort, but so does a commitment to state-of-the-art instruction. At the Trump Turnberry Golf Academy, PGA-certified golf instructors share their expertise at a facility equipped with an 11-bay covered Trackman Range, Trackman simulators and other bleeding-edge technology that combines precision data with the interactive play of closest-to-the-pin and long-drive competition, all displayed in real time on 32-inch screens. For those seeking answers in the dirt, there are also grass tees, on grounds overlooking the lighthouse and the Firth of Clyde.
