Mizuno adds to M.Craft X line with new zero-torque neck putter

Mizuno’s new putter doesn’t look low-torque, and it doesn’t balance like a typical one either.

The newest neck option to the modular Mizuno M.Craft X putter line, the M.Craft X Z, orients the shaft directly through the CG of the putter, ensuring the putter balances exactly where you hold it instead of wanting to return to toe-up. This creates what the company calls a truly zero-torque design.

“This was all about putting zero bias in it,” Mizuno director of golf Chris Voshall told GOLF. “So our goal on all of these is to fire the shaft axis directly through the CG. So a little bit different than the lie angle balanced or the square-to-square, like how they’re executing on a zero-torque or a low-torque design. So we call it infinite toe hang. It’ll hang wherever you put it.

“We’re not trying to force the putter into an orientation. We’re saying wherever you sit it, it should stay right there.”

This is now the fourth neck option in the M.Craft X family and Mizuno is also introducing two new back-piece shapes — the 2, a Triple-Wide shape that should appeal to blade users; and the 3, a Dome-Mallet shape with additional alignment features.

Like with the rest of the family, the new neck and back pieces are all interchangeable with the existing options, which brings the total number of combinations to 20.

A true zero-torque

The low-torque putter category hasn’t exactly catered well for players who have a lot of rotation in their stroke. Voshall described his own stroke as a great example of someone who hasn’t been able to take advantage of the minimized rotation.

“I slightly — it’s not a good thing — aim slightly right and I pull it just a little bit, but it’s a consistent move,” he said. “I know my putting stroke, because if you put the laser on it at address, it does not line up with the laser at impact.”

With a low-torque putter, it’s difficult for him to square the face at impact. But by completely minimizing the twisting forces with the true zero-torque design, the new M.Craft Z naturally wants to stay square throughout the stroke, allowing Voshall to pull it like he normally does.

A non-traditional traditional look

The unique reverse-plumber’s neck was chosen after testing multiple different neck options, including single-bends, slants and center shafts.

“We had three different versions of necks that we were testing and we did a whole bunch of internal testing — what looked the best, what looked the cleanest, what felt the most natural, what delivered the most consistent CG location — and the reverse plumber was the winner on everything that we looked at,” Voshall said.

The result is a family look to players who put the shaft out of the way of the visual of the ball, while keeping the axis exactly where Mizuno wanted it.

Modular customization

The new Triple Wide and Dome shapes make for five different back-piece options to customize your putter, which essentially means that Mizuno now offers five different zero-torque options when combined with the Z neck.

“It gives the player the ability to actually create zero torque on so many different options. So it becomes more of a fitting story of which one do you want?” Voshall said. “We’re late to the zero-torque game, but we’re bringing it in an option where you’ve got tons of different customizations that you can do with it.”

Mizuno’s new M.Craft X Z putter and 2 and 3 are available for pre-order starting Sept. 9 and will arrive at retail locations on Oct. 30.

As with the other M.Craft X putters, the new Z-neck style will cost $399.99, and you can purchase just the new 2 and 3 back pieces for $149.99 each.

The Z models come with 1 degree of integrated shaft lean and come standard with a matching SuperStroke TLT Pistol 1.0 grip.
