The wrists are an important connection between the hands, arms and putter, and understanding their role can help create a more consistent stroke.
How your wrists guide the putter face
The first priority is understanding how the wrists influence the putter face. The lead wrist, or the wrist closest to the target, has a significant influence on how the face is delivered through impact. If the lead wrist changes dramatically during the stroke, the putter face can open or close, causing the ball to start away from the intended line. For that reason, a stable lead wrist is an important part of consistent face control.
The trail wrist also plays an important role, particularly in controlling the relationship between the hands and the putter. Rather than actively manipulating the trail wrist, the objective is to maintain a consistent structure between the trail hand, forearm and putter. This helps control the amount of loft delivered at impact and contributes to predictable ball speed.
That does not mean the wrists should be frozen or immobile. Every golfer has some natural wrist movement during a putting stroke. The trail wrist helps maintain the relationship between the hands and putterhead and can influence loft and speed. Neither wrist should be viewed in isolation, rather they must work together as part of the entire putting motion.

As the stroke gets longer, there is naturally more movement in the hands and wrists, but that movement must remain coordinated with the shoulders and arms. The goal is to create enough length to generate the necessary speed without allowing the wrists to become overly active. Ultimately, the wrists should be stable — but not rigid. They are an important link between the body and the putter and have a direct influence on face control, loft and speed. When the wrists remain coordinated with the shoulders, arms and hands, the putter can move more consistently and return to the ball with predictable impact conditions.
The best putting stroke is not one that completely eliminates wrist movement. Instead, it is a stroke in which wrist movement is controlled, repeatable and connected to the rest of the body. Understanding this distinction can make the putting stroke feel more natural, improve distance control and provide greater confidence when standing over an important putt.
