Michael Brennan didn’t want to be done playing golf.
The 24-year-old had been in contention the past two Sundays and entered the Wyndham Championship feeling like his game was finally where it needed to be. There was only one problem. After struggling for most of the year, Brennan entered the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale ranked 105th in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings. He needed a three-way tie for second or better at Sedgefield Country Club to keep his season going to Memphis.
Better it was.
Brennan opened with rounds of 66 and 65 to enter the weekend three shots off the pace set by Beau Hossler. A sizzling Saturday 63 pulled Brennan even with Hossler and then he put his foot on the gas on Sunday, reeling off five straight birdies on the front nine to take the lead and put the pressure on Hossler, who needed a win to keep his season alive, to catch him down the stretch.
Brennan dropped a shot at 11 but got it back on 13. He pulled his tee shot on 15 well left but not far enough to reach the creek. He made par. He hooked his tee shot left on 17 but was able to gauge it out of the rough and make par again. When he reached the 18th green, Michael Brennan had a two-shot lead over Hossler and had all but secured his first trip to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Then, he rolled in a 13-foot birdie putt to put the exclamation point on his second career win. He jumped inside the top 50 with the win, and then, as Michael Brennan’s mother and father rushed the green to celebrate with their son, his mother, Shannon, delivered the best news of all.
“We’re going to the Masters,” Shannon Brennan said, hugging Michael.

“Oh my gosh, we’re going to the Masters!” Brennan exclaimed in disbelief as his mom smiled and raised her arms in celebration.
“You’re going to the Masters!”

Brennan’s first PGA Tour win came last fall at the Bank of Utah Championship, but Augusta National decided earlier in 2025 to no longer reward winners of PGA Tour fall events with Masters invites. However, Brennan still played well enough through last fall to jump inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings to qualify for the 2026 Masters, where he finished in a tie for 24th.
Brennan knew that a win at Sedgefield came with a Masters invite, but it had faded to the back of his mind as he chased a spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. His mother’s reminder left him momentarily stunned as everything that came with his second-career PGA Tour win sank in.
“I was so excited about the Masters because I had been thinking about the FedEx Cup Playoffs the whole week, like I knew that was coming,” Brennan said after his win. “I swear. I didn’t even think about the Masters until my mom told me behind 18 green. After playing this year, I was like I need to come back and play it again, so it’s nice to know that I am. But it was more probably shock value of remembering that a win gets you in.”
But that excitement to get back to Augusta National was secondary to the rush that came with him ensuring his season didn’t end Sunday, especially when he finally found his game after struggling across the board to start the season.
Outside of a T6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May, Michael Brennan had not finished better than T24 all season. It had been a frustrating season as he struggled with everything from the driver to the putter. A midseason coach change helped turn the ship around. After a T53 at the Open, Brennan came back to the States and felt things starting to click. He entered Sunday at the 3M firmly in the mix, but faded in the final round, finishing T24 as Jackson Koivun took the title. Last week in Detroit, Brennan was again among the leaders entering Sunday but shot a final-round 73 and finished T15.
Still, Michael Brennan arrived this week at Sedgefield feeling like the pieces were coming together and that his season needed to continue. He didn’t want to be playing his best golf without a ticket to the dance.
Four rounds in North Carolina later, Michael Brennan stood on the 18th green, having gone from 105th in the FedEx Cup to 47th, with a Masters ticket in his back pocket and a spot in the playoffs secured.
“I am glad to keep playing because I feel like I’m playing good golf right now. I’ve been playing good for a couple weeks,” Brennan said. “It’s just great to get another opportunity playing against some of the best players in the world. I didn’t want to go home and sit on my couch when I’m playing good golf.”
After a sizzling display on Sunday, Michael Brennan won’t be going home. He’s going to Memphis next week … and to Augusta again in April.
