Inside Rose Zhang’s near-collapse — and eventual triumph — at Augusta National

At last year’s ANWA, Rose Zhang, the top-ranked amateur in the world at the time, fought off a near-collapse amid bad weather to win. But Zhang won’t be back to defend her title. Just two months after her Augusta triumph, she won her debut LPGA event as a professional at the Mizuho Americas Open.

While Zhang won’t be playing, seven other players who finished in the top-10 last year are in the field again in 2024, including Andrea Lignell, Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio, Latanna Stone, Yuna Araki, Megha Ganne, Caitlyn Macnab and Jennie Park.

2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur format

The 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur is a 54-hole stroke play event. The first two rounds will be played at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Ga., on Wednesday and Thursday. Following those rounds, the field will be cut to the top 30 players and ties.

Friday will feature a practice round at Augusta National for all competitors, whether or not they made the cut. On Saturday, the top 30 players will compete across 18 holes at Augusta National to determine this year’s champion.

What the Augusta National Women’s Amateur winner gets

Since it’s an amateur event, no money is awarded to the winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. But they don’t go home empty-handed. The 2024 champion earns a spot in the next five ANWAs, four LPGA majors — the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open, Women’s Open, Evian Championship and Chevron Championship — and any USGA and R&A event they are eligible for over the next year.
