A raucous party is set to begin this week as the PGA Tour heads to Arizona for the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The favorites in betting odds for the tournament via BetMGM won’t surprise many, but two players further down the list might. Here’s what you need to know.
Waste Management Phoenix Open odds: This week’s favorites
There’s a common denominator among the betting odds for every tournament Jon Rahm has played this year: the World No. 1 has been stuck on top as the favorite. This week is no different at the Phoenix Open, where Rahm comes in at +750, with Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas coming in a distant second at +1400.
Trailing well behind the favorites are two proven major champions with good recent histories that perhaps belong higher on the list: Brooks Koepka and Jordan Spieth. It’s true that Koepka hasn’t won since last February, but that win happened to come at this very tournament, his second-career WMPO victory. Which makes his odds of +3000, just the 10th-best this week, a bit of a mystery.
At +2000, Spieth’s odds are more appropriate, but Spieth has a hot hand right now, fresh off a near-win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He also finished T4 at last year’s WMPO. The three-time major champ is rounding into form and a win seems to be imminent.
Waste Management Phoenix Open odds: Longshot of the week
As your eyes drift toward the bottom of this week’s odds list, they might come to rest on the name of a former World No. 1. Luke Donald has certainly seen better years on Tour (see: 2011), but his results have seen an improvement of late. After missing 17 cuts in the 2020-21 season, Donald has already made two cuts this calendar year, including a T27 at the Sony Open and T42 last week at Pebble Beach.
Donald might have extra motivation this year, given that it’s rumored he’ll be selected as the next European Ryder Cup captain. So getting to observe his potential team members as much as possible between the ropes is a priority. Why couldn’t the 44-year-old pull off his sixth PGA Tour win in the process? At +40,000 odds, a Donald win could turn your $100 bet into a cool $40,000.
