A eight-time Presidents Cup participant. A former Ryder Cup captain. A future Ryder Cup captain. And a first-timer assistant.
Davis Love III, the captain of the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club in his home state of North Carolina, has an experienced group of assistants but also a newcomer getting his first taste of international competition as an assistant.
The biennial competition is Sept. 22-25 and pits a 12-man U.S. squad against a 12-man international team (minus the European nations). The Americans lead the all-time series 11-1-1 and has never lost when the matches are staged in the U.S.
Here’s a look at the four U.S. assistant captains:
Fred Couples won 15 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1992 Masters, and has won 13 times on the PGA Tour Champions. This will be the eighth time Couples has been a part of the Presidents Cup as a player, captain or assistant captain. Couples was a player when the U.S. lost its only match in the lopsided series, in 1998 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia. He captained the Americans to three consecutive victories starting in 2009. This is the fourth time Couples will serve as an assistant.
Zach Johnson, a winner of 12 PGA Tour titles including the 2007 Masters and 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews, was named the 2023 Ryder Cup captain in February. He has played in the Presidents Cup four times and was an assistant to Tiger Woods in 2019, when the U.S. came from behind to beat the International Team, 16-14.
Steve Stricker served as Presidents Cup captain in 2017 at Liberty National where the United States won 19-11. He was also the Ryder Cup captain in 2021 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, where the U.S. beat Europe 19-9. Stricker is a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour and an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour Champions.
Webb Simpson, who will be an assistant for the first time, has represented the United States in three Presidents Cups (2011, 2013 and 2019). He is a member at Quail Hollow, which should bring valuable experience to the Americans. He has won seven times on the PGA Tour, including the 2012 U.S. Open.
