The 2021-22 PGA Tour season is starting to heat up with the second full-field event of the year, the 2022 American Express, set to kick of this Thursday in La Quinta, Calif. With just a couple days to go, it’s time to get serious about where you’re placing your bets this week. The betting odds for the American Express via BetMGM feature a familiar face at the top, with a few surprises down below. Here’s what you need to know.
2022 American Express: This week’s favorites
The betting favorite for this week will be a surprise to no one: World No. 1 Jon Rahm. The reigning U.S. Open champion has the field’s best odds to win at +600, and for good reason. Other than a MC at the Fortinet Championship last fall and a Covid-induced MC while holding the lead at the Memorial, Rahm hasn’t finished outside the Top 10 on Tour since the Byron Nelson last May.
In his first start of 2022, Rahm compiled an incredible 33-under score — one that would have set the record for lowest score-to-par in PGA Tour history if Cameron Smith hadn’t bested him by a single stroke. He’ll remain the favorite until proven otherwise, but there are a few other intriguing players near the top of the odds list.
Coming in at No. 2 is Patrick Cantlay (+900) who won both the FedEx Cup and PGA Tour Player of the Year honors in 2021. Tied for fifth at +2500 is Tony Finau, the No. 17-ranked player in the world who finished T4 at last year’s American Express. One surprise toward the top of the odds is Rickie Fowler (+5000), the fan favorite who hasn’t won a PGA Tour event since February 2019.
2022 American Express: Longshot of the week
If you’re looking for a high-risk-high-reward bet for this week, look no further than Martin Trainer, who is tied for last place in terms of odds at +100000.
The 30-year-old veteran has had a disastrous run since his win at the 2019 Puerto Rico Open, but he has shown signs of life lately, finishing T5 at the Houston Open in November and opening last week’s Sony Open with a 68 before falling back in Round 2 and missing the cut. Should Trainer do the unlikely and win, a tiny bet of $10 who pay out $10,000.
